Thursday's Children: Dream-spiration
It's one of those days when you just need a little extra coffee...also, I like to show off my self stirring mug. It's really handy and cuts down on spoons. Which is a good thing because the number of spoon trees in the world are dwindling.
Anyway, a while back, I rambled about dream inspired story ideas. See it here.
I've had several dream inspired story ideas since that post, and I have dutifully entered them into my ever expanding word document titled, appropriately, "Story Ideas". It's now four pages long and has blurbs on 26 stories (three of them are part of a trilogy idea) and three of them I've written first drafts for. In reality, I probably won't write all of them, but they popped into my head and I wrote them down.
Anyway, Tuesday night was another one of those cool dreams that decided to turn into a plot-bunny. And yes, I had to write it down.
The dream was pretty weird, and at one point I was saving the life of someone who was supposed to be some sort of savior person. As with all dreams, it was convoluted, but here is what popped out with later pondering.
It has a title, but I still need to build the world. Not sure if it is paranormal, fantasy, scifi, dystopian, or a combination of those. It's pretty loud, but I'm still in the middle of Hate Jacket and can't do anything else until I finish that.
What if your best friend was destined to save the world?
What if you were destined to destroy it?
What if you were in love with your best friend?
'Till Next Time

I saw that tweet about plot bunnies last night - thank you for satisfying my curiosity! Well, the stakes in your new story certainly sound sky-high. I've got only one story idea at the moment, which I've just begun drafting, therefore I'm jealous of your multi-page idea document. My dreams tend to be story-unworthy. Would you read a book about an exploding vacuum cleaner bag? Me either.ReplyDelete
LOL. I would probably read a book with exploding vacuum cleaner bags. Who knows, it could be some portent of the coming apocalypse.Delete
This would mean the apocalypse's epicenter is in my living room :)Delete
Oh, I like how you think. Your dreams are intriguing and I'm guessing your fiction is too. Thanks for sharing.ReplyDelete
Cool coffee cup! Dreams bring up some crazy stuff. Mine are usually too absurd to put in story - at least my kinds of stories.ReplyDelete
Yes, the coffee cup is awesomesauce. :D Usually my dreams are too weird, but every once in a while, I get a good one.Delete
You've got to be kidding me with that coffee mug - super cool!ReplyDelete
And I like Knots...intriguing indeed.
Thanks! Yes, the mug is super awesome. Love it. Works really good with the Starbucks Via I have at work.Delete
I tend to dream about stories I'm working on--which can be pretty cool or distracting.ReplyDelete
Actually, my WIP has a thread based on a dream I had many years ago.
Yup, I'll second that that's a wonderful coffee cup.
When I was in college and studying music, I would dream in full score. It was not restful. o_0Delete
I love this dream-story and want to read it. I also want your mug...where did you get it??ReplyDelete
The mug was purchased through ThinkGeek.com. There is a link in the post, but last I checked it was out of stock.Delete
Not sure when I'll get to this story, but I'll put you on the beta list. :D
LOL. That 4-page document seems like it's serving you well! That's awesome, and you never know when you'll get the chance to steal an element from one of those blurbs and combine it into another. Or mash them all into one.ReplyDelete
Thanks for sharing!
Very true, John. I've done that a couple times already.Delete
Thanks for stopping by!
I love the term plot bunny! And I totally do this, too. I always have a pad by my bed in case inspiration strikes from my subconscious!ReplyDelete
What do I have to do? Do drugs? Drink until I can't see straight? Why is it that some people can just dream up their stories while there's people like me who just have to pull teeth? I'm constantly reminded of the greats and their opiates or absinthe. Then of read of others who dream them up too. The only things I ever dream about are those restless dreams about gaming or working because I've been doing them too much. Maybe I'm just not a real writer. *shrugs* I'll keep plugging away though. Sorry to be the Debbie Downer in your comments. Didn't mean to be. Just wish I could have that type of luck ;-) BTW I LOVE KNOT...AS I HAVE EVERY OTHER IDEA OF YOURS! *THROWS SPARKLY COOKIE CONFETTI*Delete
I don't have a good spot for a not pad, but if it sticks with me into the day, then it's worth writing down.Delete
Jaime, you ARE a real writer! Not everyone has vivid dreams. Last night I had a really stressful dream where I got in a huge argument with my older brother! Also, maybe you could write a story about a gamer or something...Delete
And thank you for the cookie confetti. Is it sparkly from the ground up Cullen? :D
I have wildly vivid dreams. Unfortunately, they're so bizarre, I'm not sure any would translate into decent stories! :D I love the sound of Knots, though! Definitely sounds like something I'd read! :DDelete
Thanks! It might be my next project. :DDelete
That coffee cup is AWESOME! It'd be great for hot chocolate. Ya know how, sometimes, when you get to the end you find a thick chocolate sludge at the bottom?ReplyDelete
It's nice when dreams inspire. Most of mine are pointless or disturbing. lol
Oh yes, the mug would be perfect for hot chocolate. I have Starbucks Via at my office so it keeps it mixed up.Delete
Most of my dreams are pointless and disturbing, but every once in a while, I get a good one. :D
Love the knots concept as well (and the coffee cup - who doesn't love a good gadget, especially one that saves the spoon trees!). Glad to know the inspiration is well and truly stirred up too!ReplyDelete
Yes, Spoon Trees are a national treasure! ;-)Delete
And thanks. I like the idea too. It's been percolating quite well.
I love dreams!!! And I have many, often. Maybe I will write them all down and make a mess of a story. Could be cool. And never worry about where a story fits, it fits where it fits, when it's time for it to stay.ReplyDelete
Sounds like that story could be very interesting and strange!Delete
The only reason I need to think about genre is for world building purposes. I keep heading towards SciFi-ish, but not sure yet. We'll see.
